Carolyn Caballes, Director of Nutrition and Food Services at Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center located in Honolulu, Hawaii, received the 2015 Food Service Director of the Year Award at the 10th Annual Good to Best Conference.? Carolyn was presented with a trophy and a memento for her special achievement. ?The Good to Best Conference, which took place March 20 ? 22, 2015 at the Paradise Point Resort & Spa in San Diego, California, is an annual meeting of healthcare food service directors, operators, executive chefs, and industry leaders.? The Good to Best Conference is hosted by the Good to Best Association and DM&A (Don Miller & Associates).
The Food Service Director of the Year is the top honor presented each year at Good to Best to a hospital Food Service Director that exemplifies outstanding catalytic leadership and a creative and effective management style, notable departmental improvements, and paves the path to success for his or her team.? The Good to Best Achievement Award recipients are selected through a nomination, review and selection process by the Good to Best Awards Committee.
In addition, Carolyn was also recognized with the KNDS (Knowing Numbers Drives Success) Award.? Rarely does one individual get recognized with two major awards at the same time at Good to Best.
Carolyn possesses the essential attributes that make her a great leader which has paved the way for success for her department. Some of these attributes include: honesty, the ability to delegate, effective communication style, confidence, commitment, positive attitude, creativity, intuition, and the ability to inspire.? Carolyn?s personal values and core beliefs are a direct reflection of Kaiser Permanente?s Core Values.
Carolyn is a talented professional who knows how to ask questions, and knows how to get help.? Sometimes knowing what we don?t know is a manager?s best quality. Determination, creativity and being the astute communicator she is has given her the edge to transform not only the department, but also herself.
Wanting to be confident in managing financials was important to Carolyn and learning about the numbers gave her the chance to capture lost meals, find new cash streams, and understand what the numbers mean and how to use data and so much more.
Between 2013 and 2014 Carolyn increased meal equivalents by over 40%, increased retail sales by 10%, identified real cash for her department, became the first hospital in Hawaii to implement Room Service, and as reported in Pacific Business News on August 20, 2014 decreased costs by $1.5 million by bringing food preparation in-house.? She used data to show that cost net of cash per patient day decreased, net cost per patient day decreased, and patient satisfaction increased all while meeting your productivity targets.
The Good to Best Association congratulates Carolyn Caballes and Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center for this great achievement.
